After much teasing and testing, Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 5 N – a full fat sports EV based on the family-friendly SUV.

Following on from the past models – the i20 N, i30 N and Kona N – the Ioniq 5 N is the first electric N car and comes with a host of new features and more dynamic styling.

It’s an alternative to cars like the Kia EV6 GT and Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, and is set to go on sale by the end of 2023.

New Hyundai Ioniq 5 N available to order now

You can place your order for a new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N now, and prices start from £65,000. That’s £4,500 more than the Kia EV6 GT, however it undercuts the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT by over £7,500.

Standard equipment includes half leather sports seats, two 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a Bose sound system. Outside, you’ll find 21-inch alloy wheels, sticky performance tyres, rear privacy glass and a much more aggressive-looking bodykit than the standard Ioniq 5.

There are just three optional extras you can splash out on. Metallic paint will cost you £665, while a cool-looking matte finish will set you back £885. If you want the panoramic glass roof, you’ll have to pay out £1,250.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N design

When you look at the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N next to the standard car, you can instantly see its sporting credentials. This flagship hot EV has a much more aggressive look, while still retaining its retro-futuristic look.

Let’s start with that bumper, because it’s radically different to the standard car’s. You have massive air intakes, sporty red trim and a lower splitter to help this car stand out, as well as N badging and contrasting black accents.

That theme continues down the side of the car, where you’ll find flared wheel arches to accommodate the 12-inch forged aluminium wheels. There are also some vents in the rear quarter to help channel air over the car, and some large side skirts.

The rear of the Ioniq 5 N has an even more muscular look to it, almost as if the standard car has been doing squats at the gym. Those swollen wheel arches are even more prominent from the back, and there’s a huge diffuser in the lower bumper. The roof spoiler completes the look, with a cool triagular third brake light which has a race car vibe to it.

The N design upgrades outside have been continued inside, with lots of N-specific trim pieces – like the steering wheel, sport seats with a two-tone finish, metal pedals and scuff plates.

The N steering wheel comes with a central logo and buttons to control the drive mode settings, including the N Grin Boost button that engages the overboost for the electric motors and gives you full power. Paddles to alter brake regen and the new N e-shift feature, which simulates the experience of using an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Along with the e-shift, there’s the N Active Sound+ system that adds more to the experience by pumping sounds into the cabin.

Hyundai has also added to the centre console, by including a section under the touchscreen that has knee pads and shin supports that help with comfort at higher speeds. That section also holds USB-C charger ports, a wireless charging pad and cupholders.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N performance

The headline for the Ioniq 5 N though is the motors and the boosted performance. The dual motors – one mounted on each axle – develop a combined 609hp in normal driving and 650hp in N Grin Boost mode for maximum attack.

The 0-60mph is just 3.4 seconds with N Grin Boost, while there’s a top speed of 161mph.

To enhance the effectiveness of the new 84kWh battery pack, Hyundai has increased the energy efficiency of the motors, while there’s improved thermal management with increased cooling systems. There’s also independent radiators for the motors and brakes to prevent overheating and brake fade.

Before driving, you can make the most of the battery pack for drag racing and track driving in ‘Drag’ or ‘Track’ modes, which pre-condition the battery to be warmer for maximum performance or cooler for longer periods of fast driving.

The N ‘Race’ driving mode comes with Sprint and Endurance options. ‘Sprint’ focuses more on short bursts of maximum performance, while ‘Endurance’ sets up for more range and time on track.

To charge up the battery pack when you’re done, you can charge at up to 350kW on a DC charger and go from 10-80% in just 18 minutes.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N chassis

With EVs known more for straight line performance, Hyundai has drawn from its rallying programme to make the Ioniq 5 fun to drive too.

Independent drive axles inspired by the World Rally Championship car have been reinforced to withstand the torque from the electric motors, while unsprung mass has also been reduced by fitting them.

Hyundai has strengthened the steering column for improved response and feedback from the wheels, while the power steering has a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback.

The N Pedal has been fitted to improve throttle response and sensitivity to counteract the weight of the car. Using the i-Pedal, which uses regenerative braking to slow down and put power back into the battery, helps with weight transfer and sharper cornering.

You also get a drift optimiser and 11 settings for the torque distribution across both axles, while an electronic limited slip differential allows for improved cornering performance.

To make sure you stop, Hyundai has fitted 400mm disc brakes on the front with four-piston calipers, and 360mm discs on the rear.
