Find out more about the BMW iX2

Is the BMW iX2 a good car?

Like the look of the BMW X2, but prefer to have one that isn't powered by a petrol engine? You're in luck, as this rakish compact SUV is also available as a fully electric car called the BMW iX2.

With its upmarket brand appeal, distinctive design and low running costs, the BMW iX2 feels like the modern, high-tech alternative to the X2 – a bit like an air fryer is to a deep fat fryer.

However, just as you shouldn't splash your cash on the first on-trend tech you see, you may want to consider other options to the iX2 before placing an order – not least because, in the iX2's case, it's on the expensive side, even by premium SUV standards.

Its starting price is on par with a like-for-like Genesis GV60 and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, but more than what you'll pay for equivalent versions of the Mercedes EQA, Tesla Model Y and Volvo C40. For the same price as an iX2, you can also get a very nicely-trimmed Kia EV6, Skoda Enyaq Coupe and Volkswagen ID5.

Since the BMW iX2 is very closely related to the BMW iX1, we expect that car’s various powertrain options will find their way into the iX2 eventually, but for now it only has a 306hp motor with up to 266 miles of range according to official figures.

In a world where versions of the Q4 e-tron and GV60 can go 300+ miles between charges, that doesn’t sound all that amazing, though it’s still decent enough – especially when you consider that the BMW’s battery is quite a bit smaller than the ones used in the Audi and Genesis.

With 306hp and all-wheel drive, the BMW iX2 has the performance to back up the car's sporty looks

Having 306hp on hand means the iX2 should be pretty quick, too. BMW claims a sports car-esque 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, meaning the iX2 has more than enough in reserve for everyday driving duties.

The trim line-up is nice and straightforward on the iX2, because there's just one option: M Sport. That means you get a subtly sporty bodykit and 19-inch alloy wheels, as well as interior touches like a leather-wrapped steering wheel. There’s quite a bit of tech on the iX2, too, ranging from the big 10.0-inch displays and adaptive suspension, to the partially-autonomous reverse parking assistant.

Whereas the old BMW X2 was a bit cramped inside, the iX2 is much roomier in comparison. That sloping roofline will eat into rear seat headroom, but there’s much more leg room this time around.

The boot space of 525 litres is also decent when compared with alternatives – a Q4 Sportback e-tron is only marginally roomier, and despite its boxier shape the Mercedes EQA has less space on offer.
