Hot on the heels of the new Mercedes GLC Coupe, two new hot AMG versions have been revealed. Read on for all you need to know.

If you fancy the swoopy Mercedes GLC Coupe, but want some extra performance, the German brand has just revealed two versions from its AMG performance division.
The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe and 63 S E Performance both use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Mercedes-AMG A45 S hatchback, with the 63 S getting hybrid assistance for added power.

Before we get to the added power, let’s take a look at the styling changes which set the AMG versions of the GLC Coupe apart from the standard models.
As you’d expect, both the AMG 43 and 63 look a fair bit more aggressive than the normal GLC. Up front you get an AMG-specific grille with vertical slats, as well as a deeper front bumper with larger air intakes.
Looking down the side, you have the obligatory sporty side skirts and flared wheel arches to make the car look more muscular. There’s also a range of unique alloy wheel designs, starting at 19 inches and going up to 21 inches.
When you sit the standard GLC coupe next to the AMG version, you’ll notice the deeper bumper straight away as well as the boot lip spoiler. It’s also at the rear that you see the only real difference between the 43 and 63 S versions of the AMG model, and that’s the tailpipes. The 43 has round exhausts, while the more powerful 63 S has rectangular tips.

Now for arguably the most important reason you’ll buy this AMG version of the GLC Coupe over the standard car: performance.
Looking at the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe first, it has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It’s actually the same unit you’ll find in the Mercedes-AMG A45 S hot hatchback, and it puts out the same 421hp and 500Nm of torque as that car as well.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and it’ll do 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. That’s almost a full second slower than the A45 S, but that car is much smaller and lighter. A more fair comparison would be to the BMW X4 M40i, and that car will complete the sprint in 4.9 seconds.
Fans of an AMG V8 will be disappointed to hear that the AMG GLC 63 S Coupe follows in the footsteps of the C63 S E Performance saloon, meaning it uses the same 2.0-litre engine as the AMG 43 with hybrid assistance from an electric motor.

Before you start weeping into your AMG-branded clothing, the upshot of this is a lot of power. The AMG GLC 63 S E Performance puts out the same 680hp and 1,020Nm of torque as the AMG C63, and it’ll do 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. That’s only one-tenth of a second slower than the saloon it shares its powertrain with, while the BMW X4 M Competition takes 3.8 seconds to hit 60mph.

It’s no good having all this power on tap if it all falls apart in the corners, so plenty of work has been done to the suspension to keep the Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe in check when the going gets twisty.
Both the AMG 43 and AMG 63 S get adaptive dampers as standard which keep body roll to a minimum, something which can be further enhanced on the 63 S with the optional active roll stabilisation. This replaces the traditional anti-roll bars with electromechanical stabilisers which can actively adjust to compensate for lean through the corners.
You also get rear-wheel-steering as standard on both cars, which can turn the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front at low speed to make the car more agile and manoeuvrable, and turn in the same direction as the front above 62mph to aid high-speed stability.

Changes to the interior of these AMG versions of the GLC Coupe are less dramatic than the exterior, although you do get some sporty titbits to liven things up inside.
You get AMG-specific sports seats with a suede-look covering, as well as a flat-bottomed steering wheel. There are also some unique graphics for the infotainment system and digital drivers display.
New Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe: when can I buy one?
Mercedes hasn’t actually confirmed when the new AMG GLC Coupe will go on sale, however you can expect it to hit the showrooms shortly after the SUV version which was revealed earlier this year. Early 2024 seems likely.
As for price, while there’s no official word on that either it’ll certainly fetch a premium over the standard car. A figure of around £90,000 for the 43 version seems reasonable, while the 63 S could sneak into six-figures.
