These are the new fully electric Peugeot e-308 hatchback and e-308 SW estate car. They’re based on the petrol-powered 308 (so look similar and share plenty of components) but promise the benefits of zero exhaust-pipe emissions and cheap running costs.

  • Joined by e-308 SW estate
  • 54kWh battery
  • Up to 248 miles of range
  • 156hp electric motor
  • Design unchanged
  • On sale in 2023

This is the new Peugeot e-308. Yes, it looks exactly the same as the standard 308 you can buy today, but under that stylish body it comes with Peugeot’s latest electric motor and battery tech.

This means you get a greater electric range and a more powerful motor than with the electric Peugeot e-2008 SUV.

New Peugeot e-308 range and charging

Both the new Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW come with the same 54kWh battery pack. This has a 54kWh capacity, which is about the same as in a Peugeot e-2008 but slightly less than the 58kWh battery you get in a VW ID3.

The new e-308 hatchback and estate both have a claimed range of 248 miles according to the latest WLTP tests. In normal everyday driving, this means you should be able to travel around 200 miles on a full charge.

The e-308’s range figure is slightly less than the 263 miles VW claims for its ID3 hatchback, but it’s further than the claimed 212 miles you’ll get from a Peugeot e-2008 SUV. It’s also further than the 214-mile claimed range of an MG 5 electric estate car, which is the only mainstream electric estate car currently on sale.

The new Peugeot e-308 hatchback and SW estate are both compatible with 100kW fast chargers, meaning you’ll be able to boost their batteries from 20% to 80% fully charged in as little as 25 minutes.

New Peugeot e-308 motor and performance

The new e-308 and e-308 SW come with the same electric motor. This drives the front wheels and will feel similar to cars that use a conventional automatic gearbox (although the electric Peugeots will be quieter and there won’t be any noticeable gear changes as you drive).

Peugeot hasn’t confirmed any performance figures, but it has said the motor produces 156hp. That should be plenty in a small family hatchback. The instant power delivery of electric motors tends to make EVs feel quicker than comparable petrol- and diesel-powered cars, too.

New Peugeot e-308 and SW: how much will it cost?

You’ll be able to buy the new Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW estate in 2023. Peugeot hasn’t confirmed how much the new cars will cost, but expect them to cost around the same as the £33,700 Peugeot e-2008 electric SUV.

That means these new electric family cars will likely cost slightly more than the £29,695 MG 5 EV  and less than the £36,195 entry-level Volkswagen ID3.
