New Skoda Superb revealed: cavernous estate car gets even more spacious

This is the all-new Skoda Superb. The brand’s flagship estate car is in its third generation now, and it’s bigger and more practical than ever before.

Not only is it much larger than before, it’s also packing more technology, a new range of engines and is sporting a new look on the outside. You can expect to see the new Superb on UK roads in the spring next year.

When will the new Skoda Superb go on sale?

The new Skoda Superb will be available to order at the start of next year, with deliveries expected in the spring. While pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, you can expect it to fetch a premium over the outgoing car. A figure of around £35,000 is likely.

New Skoda Superb design

Skoda gave us plenty of design teasers, but the new Superb’s styling has finally been revealed in full. At a glance, it doesn’t look too dissimilar to the outgoing car, however it is an all-new car with plenty of modern design touches.

Starting up front, this new car has a slightly reshaped grille with an octagonal design, as well as sleek LED headlights. The car is also more aerodynamic than before thanks to a more steeply raked windscreen and special air curtains in the lower bumper which should help to make it more efficient.

As with the outgoing car, you have a choice of either fastback or estate body styles. The fastback essentially looks like a posh saloon car, but with the added practicality of a liftback tailgate, while the estate is best for all-out practicality.

The door mirrors have been designed to help airflow over the car, and the estate version also gets some special side fins and a more streamlined roofline to further reduce drag. Alloy wheels start at 17-inches, rising to 19-inches as an option.

Looking to the rear of the car, the new Superb estate (pictured on the left) gets a sporty-looking roof spoiler and both cars have new, more sleek LED tail lights. There are also no fake vents here, just a clean and simple bumper which further enhances Skoda’s reputation for no-nonsense functionality.

New Skoda Superb interior and infotainment

The cabin of the new Skoda Superb was revealed in full a few months ago, and it’s worlds away from the slightly dated interior of the outgoing car.

Make no mistake, the old car had a well-made, logically laid out dashboard, but this new one looks like a much more interesting place to be. You get a range of premium-looking materials, and the dashboard itself has more curves and contours to keep things looking interesting.

Skoda hasn’t gone for form over function either, the brand is renowned for its ‘Simply Clever’ features after all. The new Superb bucks the trend of touchscreen-based climate controls, favouring physical knobs instead. The three dials each have a 32mm display, and they’re used to control things such as climate temperature, fan speed, heated seats and stereo volume. The central one can also be configured to perform different functions such as zooming in on your map.

The centrepiece of the dashboard is a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a hefty 4.0-inches larger than the one you get as standard in the outgoing car, and you have a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display as well. The gear selector has been moved to the steering column, freeing up space in the centre console for storage and furthering Skoda’s reputation for cavernous practicality.

Speaking of cavernous, you can’t talk about the Skoda Superb without mentioning boot space. The outgoing car had one of the biggest boots in its class, and the new one has even more carrying capacity. Go for the hatchback and you’ll get 645 litres of space, 20 litres more than the old car and almost 30 litres up on the massive Kia Sorento SUV. It’s the estate which impresses most though, offering a whopping 690 litres of luggage space. Not only is that 30 litres more than the old car, it trumps the Audi A6 Avant by a colossal 125 litres.

New Skoda Superb engines

There are six new engine options for the Skoda Superb: three petrols, two diesels and a plug-in hybrid. All come as standard with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, there’s no manual option anymore.

The entry-level car gets a 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol with 150hp and front-wheel drive. There are also two 2.0-litre petrols with either 204hp and front-wheel-drive or 265hp and all-wheel-drive.

If you tackle lots of motorway miles, diesel could still be the right option. Skoda has you covered in this regard with 2.0-litre diesels, one with 150hp and front-wheel drive and one with 193hp and all-wheel drive.

Finally you have the plug-in hybrid. It uses the 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with an electric motor, making a combined 204hp. This model also has more than 62 miles of range on electric power alone, an improvement of around 20 miles on the current Superb.
