The Motability charity helps people in receipt of certain disability-related benefits get behind the wheel of a new car in exchange for setting aside the mobility element of their benefits.

Countless models are offered through Motability, and with the high ride height of SUVs often making them easier to get in and out than conventional hatchbacks, saloons and estates, for many people with disabilities, this class of car makes a great choice. Here, we pick 10 of the best SUVs available via the Motability scheme.

Skoda Karoq

One of the most impressively well-rounded mid-size SUVs, the Skoda Karoq offers enormous amounts of passenger space, a vast 588-litre boot, as well as optional 'Varioflex' rear seats, which can be slid forward or backwards to balance rear passenger room with cargo space, or removed altogether, effectively turning the Karoq into a van with windows. But the Karoq is more than just a practical car: it's also rather nice to drive, with light, easy controls and excellent refinement, together with low running costs and well-made interior with logical, sensible controls. Sure, its not the most exciting car in the world and the styling plays it safe, but the Karoq does so much, so well, that this is hardly an issue.

The Peugeot 2008 is a really nicely styled SUV, with sleek headlight and rear light designs that resemble a lion's teeth and claws respectively. The 2008's intriguing design carries over to the inside, where the dashboard offers a cocooning wraparound feel, and the driver's digital display features some neat 3D graphics. Do make sure you're happy with the small steering wheel, which is designed to be looked over rather than through when viewing this display: it takes a little getting used to. Aside from that, though, the 2008 drives very nicely and offers super-low ruuning costs, too.

Okay, so it's more of a people-carrier/estate car than a conventional SUV, but the Dacia Jogger has so much going for it that we'll stretch the rules slightly to include it here. With seven seats, a comfortable ride from its compliant suspension and an interior that belies its low price, the Jogger might just be all the car you ever need; we liked it so much we gave it a 2023 'Buy it' award.

Another winner of our Buy it awards, the electric MG4 actually took the crown as our 2023 car of the year. Why do we rate it so highly? Well, in addition to an impressive range of up to 281 miles officially, the MG4 looks absolutely fantastic, is genuinely fun to drive, offers great value for money and has a distinct, likeable character.

Okay, so you'll need to have around £2,800 spare to make a one-off 'advanced payment' (this is in addition the the weekly benefits you would give up for the car) if you want the Tiguan Allspace, but do so and you'll have a seriously competent seven-seat SUV on your driveway. Available with a manual or automatic transmission and paired well with an efficient 148hp 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Tiguan Allspace drives very nicely, and offers fantastic practicality and flexibility thanks to the third row of seats. Oh, and if you don't need that third row, the five-seat Tirguan is also offered via Motability.
Renault Captur

A small, comfortable french SUV in a similar mould to the Peugeot 2008, the Captur is available through Motability both as a petrol-powered model, and in E-Tech hybrid form. Go for the latter and you'll need to make a £700 or so advanced payment, but you'll benefit from impressive fuel economy and a smooth driving experience. The Captur also offers good passenger and cargo space, together with a comfortable, well-built cabin, but do note the petrol model has a slightly larger boot than the hybrid.
Kia Sportage

The previous Sportage was already an excellent car, but the latest version is even better, with seriously sharp looks, a really impressive interior design, and a comfortable, relaxing driving experience. Interior and boot space both impress, as does the amount of equipment you get as standard - although it's worth stepping up to '3' trim if you can (this requires a higher advanced payment), as this brings a larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen (up from eight inches), as well as a second 12.3-inch screen for the dashboard dials.
Hyundai Tucson

A sister car to the mechanically related Kia Sportage (Hyundai and Kia are part of the same company), the Tucson also has a daring front-end deisgn that you'll either like or not, togehter with a spacious, comfortable driving experience, a huge boot and excellent levels of standard equipment. We slightly prefer the Sportage, but opting for the Tucson is perfectly understandable, and no real hardship.

Okay, so we don't rate the Tonale quite as highly as some of the cars on this list - it can be a little uncomfortable on bumpy roads, while cabin storage is slightly limited - but the Alfa Romeo badge has enduring appeal, while the Tonale looks sharp, has a neatly deisgned interior that's made from nice materials, and its driving experience is impressive. So sure, the Skoda Karoq is ostensibly a better car, but just because you need a senseible SUV, there's no reason not to make a decision that's arguably led more by the heart than the head.
Ford Puma

The Ford Puma is a small SUV that's based on the same mechanical platform as the Fiesta, which means you get that supermini's fantastic handling, but with a higher driving position that makes for easier access to the cabin. The back seats are a little tight for space and the cabin doesn't feel that special, but the Puma makes up for this with fantastic exterior styling, and a peppy, enthusiastic character.

Modern automatic gearboxes have become so smooth and efficient, while almost every car on this list is offered as an auto, so the best advice is to choose the car you want, and then option the self-shifting gearbox. Volkswagen's dual-clutch gearbox is particularly nice, though, and you'll find this in both the Skoda Karoq, and the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

Quite a few, as it happens. From Renault there's the Captur and Arkana; from Toyota there's the C-HR; Nissan's E-Power Qashqai and X-Trail are available, as is the hybrid Ford Kuga, the Honda HR-V, the Peugeot 3008, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Kia XCeed and Hyundai Tucson, the Vauxhall Grandland PHEV, and the BMW X2 and MINI Countryman PHEVs. Do note hybrids, and PHEVs in particular, tend to cost more than conventional petrol and diesel models, so you may need a substantial advanced payment for some of these cars.

The Skoda Kodiaq is one of the largest SUVs avilable through Motability; you'll need to make an advanced payment to get your hands on one of these, but you'll end up with one of the most competent and characterful seven-seat SUVs on the market if you do.
