The Q7 looms in the rear-view mirrors of other cars like a mobilised block of flats, but the upside for you is that the cabin is massive, and there is decent space in the third row of seats for grown-ups, plus ISOFIX mounts in all the five rear seats. You can’t get seven seats with the plug-in hybrid option, though.

There’s plenty of space in the rear seats, but the third row is a very tight kiddies-only zone. You get ISOFIX in the outer-two middle row seats, and in both third-row seats.

The third row seats are juuuuuust about roomy enough for adults, at least on short hops, and there’s ample leg-and-headroom in the middle row. You get four ISOFIX points — outer seats in the middle row, and both third row seats.

You can spec it with a six-seater layout, with ‘captain’s chairs’ in the middle row, for the ultimate in luxury. For posh kids, you get four ISOFIX points in the middle and third rows.

That depends on whether you think the Dacia Jogger counts as an SUV. If you think it does, then you can have seven roomy seats (and two rear ISOFIX points as standard) for £15,345. It’s about all the car you could ever really need (net of the poor NCAP safety rating). If the Jogger isn’t truly an SUV, then you’ll need to spend considerably more. The Peugeot 5008 is the next-most affordable, with the SEAT Tarraco coming a close second.

Do you mean on the outside? Step forward the new long-wheelbase seven-seat Range Rover, with a total exterior length of 5,252mm — just pipping the Mercedes GLS. If you mean on the inside, then it’s the BMW X7 with a massive 954mm of rear legroom.

The Peugeot 5008 the champ here — fold down the third row, and you have 780 litres of boot volume to play with. Fold down all the seats (and remove the third row entirely) and you have 2,150 litres of space, although you won’t have a flat load floor. The Skoda Kodiaq can offer more space, with a maximum 835 litres on offer, but that’s for the five-seat model, not the seven-seater.

The problem is that the massive upswing in SUV sales has more or less killed off the seven-seat MPV market altogether. The last few standing are cars such as the Volkswagen Touran, and the Ford S-Max and Galaxy, although Volkswagen also now has the impressive new Multivan. The Renault Espace and Scenic? Seat Alhambra? Mazda 5? Vauxhall Zafira? All gone. Beyond that, you’re looking at van-based seven-seaters such as the Peugeot Traveller or the Citroen Berlingo. The thing is, these are the cars you actually should be buying — they’re almost always roomier than a comparable SUV model, and usually have better fuel economy and emissions, too.
