It seems like a lifetime ago that Elon Musk first stood on stage and announced the Tesla Cybertruck, and this bonkers vehicle is finally getting close to completion.

The first lucky customers will be taking delivery of their trucks on 30 November, and some of the car’s specs have been leaked online.

New Tesla Cybertruck delivery event confirmed

Cybertruck customers have been waiting for around four years to get hold of their cars, and a few lucky individuals will finally be handed the keys on 30 November.

Don’t get too excited just yet, this is likely to be an event for a handful of Tesla insiders. The majority of customers will have to wait until 2024.

It’s been a long and difficult journey to get this far, with Musk saying that Tesla “dug its own grave with the Cybertruck”. Getting a truck with this level of tech on board and a design like this ready for mass production was never going to be easy, and there have clearly been plenty of obstacles along the way. The body is made of an ultra-hard stainless steel which Tesla had to invent itself, and it had to develop a 9,000 ton pressing machine to produce the body panels.

Production will start slowly at the end of 2023, with the assembly line ramping up to full capacity in 2024. As for price, while nothing is confirmed just yet it is rumoured that single motor cars will start from around $50,000 – around £41,000.

It still remains unclear whether or not the Cybertruck will come to the UK, or even Europe for that matter. Tesla removed the option to pre-order a Cybertruck in the UK and Europe last year, and the option hasn’t returned yet.

Possible Tesla Cybertruck specs leaked

In addition to a confirmed delivery event, YouTube Channel The Fast Lane EV recently published a video appearing to show some leaked stats for this truck from a Tesla insider.

These specs are unconfirmed, however they quote a weight for the dual motor version of a hefty 3,025kgs, while the more powerful tri-motor version could tip the scales at 3,125kg. Tesla has already confirmed that the Cybertruck will have 1,587kg of payload capacity, and these leaked specs suggest that it’ll be able to take a further 190kg in the frunk.

Again, it’s important to take these specs with a healthy pinch of salt. It’s not known who this Tesla insider is, or how they got their hands on this information. If this does turn out to be true though, the Cybertruck will weigh well over 4 tons fully loaded, meaning you’d need a HGV licence to drive it in the UK.

The leaked numbers also show that the Cybertruck could have a total towing capacity of a whopping five tons. Should this be the case, the Cybertruck will trump the Ford F150 Lightning’s towing capability by almost 500kg.

This list of specs also suggests that the Cybertruck could be 5,669mm long and 2,029mm wide. This would make it slightly shorter than the Ford F150 Lightning, and around the same width as that truck.

New Tesla Cybertruck design

When Musk pulled the covers off the Tesla Cybertruck back in 2019, it certainly caused a stir amongst customers and the media with its whacky design. Four years later, the production version looks almost exactly the same as the wild concept car.

It looks as though it was designed using nothing but a ruler, a bit like an axe head on wheels. Almost the entire body is made up of unpainted stainless steel panels, something which should keep production costs down.

People have flooded X (formerly known as Twitter) with pictures of the Cybertruck out and about at events and during development testing. The front end has the same stubby bonnet and full-width light bar as the concept, as well as a massive single windscreen wiper.

The side profile is like no other pickup truck out there, as it looks like a rolling triangle. The bonnet and windscreen follow the same shallow angle up to the roof where it drops off at a sharp angle down to the end of the bed. The wheels have a unique design as well, with the spokes appearing to be moulded into the tyres.

A Cybertruck was also seen at a cars and coffee event in Santa Monica with a stealthy-looking matte black wrap, and this X user doesn’t seem to be a fan. Tesla has recently announced a range of wraps available from dealers for the Model 3 and Model Y. It stands to reason then that the brand could offer this on the bare-metal Cybertruck. This would be much cheaper than painting every vehicle, especially as wrapping these flat panels will be pretty straight forward.

New Tesla Cybertruck interior and practicality

The interior of the new Cybertruck is as you’d expect from a Tesla – it’s very minimalist with the dashboard being dominated by an enormous screen. There’s no steering yoke like you get in the Model S and Model Y, instead it appears to have a squared-off version of the wheel you get in the new Model 3.

Tesla claims the Cybertruck has 2,830 litres of lockable cargo capacity. This includes the load bed (which Tesla calls the vault) the frunk, and even more storage behind the side windows.

The Cybertruck has integrated 120-volt and 240-volt powerpoints, turning it into a kind of mobile mini power station. It also features an on-board air compressor.

New Tesla Cybertruck motors and performance

From launch, the Tesla Cybertruck is set to be offered with a choice of dual-motor or tri-motor configurations. Musk also hinted in 2021 that a quad-motor version would be available, however it isn’t known if this will be available straight away.

This four-motor car will also have rear-wheel steering, allowing it to “crab walk” like the Hummer EV. That car can use its four wheel steering to move the truck diagonally (as a crab might) to manoeuvre around large boulders and rocks when you’re off-roading.

Tesla has confirmed the all-wheel-drive tri-motor Cybertruck will accelerate from 0-60mph in under three seconds. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive model does the same sprint in under 4.5 seconds, while the entry-level single-motor with rear-wheel drive will take 6.5 seconds to go from 0-60mph.

New Tesla Cybertruck batteries, range and  megawatt charging

Tesla says its tri-motor Cybertruck can manage 500 miles between charges.

The mid-spec dual-motor model, meanwhile, can manage 300 miles, but the entry-level rear-drive Cybertruck will only do 250 miles between electrical top-ups.

Elon Musk has also previously said that the Cybertruck will be able to use megawatt chargers. These stations are primarily designed to keep the Tesla Semi truck juiced up, and they have approximately four times the power of the standard 250kW Tesla Supercharger allowing for much faster charging times.
