Is a used Vauxhall Mokka a good car?

The second-generation Vauxhall Mokka is a very handsome compact crossover, which aims right at the heart of the fast-growing small SUV market. As a used buy, it’s a good choice as it’s new enough to feel modern, but there are plenty around to choose from, and plenty of Vauxhall dealers too.

Certainly, it’s a more interesting car to look at than the likes of the VW T-Cross, especially if you get one of the racier paint jobs. The cabin can look a bit dour in comparison to the outside, but it is well made. The fiddly-ness of the touchscreen in the centre will drive you mad, though at least it does come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You can choose from a sparky 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, or a rather more sluggish 1.5-litre diesel. There’s also an all-electric Mokka e, but that’s a bit short on range, squeezing just 220 miles out of its 50kWh battery. It’s a good choice for anyone doing most of their miles in town, but we’d prefer the all-round performance of the petrol engine — which is also a very frugal engine.

Space in the back is a bit tight — a Skoda Kamiq is way more roomy than this — but the boot is OK, if nothing special. That swoopy styling does make it a bit tricky to park and manoeuvre in town though, as over-the-shoulder visibility is quite poor.

The Vauxhall Mokka is decent to drive, though, with well-balanced steering and a perky chassis, just don’t go expecting the driver-involvement of the Ford Puma.

What to look for when buying a second hand Vauxhall Mokka

The Mokka uses the same engines as the Peugeot 2008 and that’s very good news — Peugeot has been recently topping, or at least finishing very high up, in reliability surveys and the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel are solidly reliable engines.

Electrical problems aren’t unknown, though, so check that everything in the cabin is working as it should. Make sure you check the timing belt for the 1.2-litre petrol engine — it’s actually designed to be lubricated (unique in the timing belt world) and if it’s not kept greased it can crack and fail. Check also for poor oil pressure, and if you see any blue smoke, that means the turbocharger is on the way out.
