Is a used Nissan Qashqai a good car?

The Nissan Qashqai is one of the UK’s most popular cars for good reason. For buyers who want an affordable family car with that high-riding SUV driving experience, this Nissan makes a great case for itself.

Particularly the latest generation, which went on sale in 2021 and is by far the most stylish yet – both inside and out. Interior quality is decent in all models, but if you want the poshest one you should go for Tekna+ cars, which get leather upholstery.

Despite the positives, rear passenger space isn’t great for adults, while the boot space lags well behind rivals. Low-spec cars also get an old-school radio system, and while high-spec cars get a 12.3-inch infotainment system, it’s a bit clunky to use.

What to look for when buying a second hand Nissan Qashqai

The Bose audio system might sound like an appealing upgrade, but owners have noted that it’s nothing special. Furthermore, the subwoofer in the boot eats into the already mediocre boot space. It might be worth saving some pennies on a Bose-less car, unless the luggage space doesn’t bother you.

There have also been complaints about the infotainment screen freezing and becoming unresponsive. This tends to be a short-term issue that can usually be fixed by turning the car off and on again.

You should also take care when checking the interior of the Qashqai. The majority will have been used as family cars, so might have been through the wars. Give interior trim a poke, prod and pull to check everything is still securely in place.

Nissan Qashqai FAQs

There are five trim levels on the Qashqai. Visia is the entry-level model, followed by Acenta Premium, N-Connecta, Tekna, and Tekna+ at the top of the range.

It’s the Tekna+ model, which gets 20-inch alloy wheels, quilted premium leather seat front, Bose sound system and LED front fog lights.

If budget is important, Visia and Acenta Premium are more affordable and still pretty well equipped. However, if you can afford the extra cash, Tekna+ models are easily the most desirable.

There are two petrol engines with outputs of 140hp and 158hp.  A hybrid called ‘e-Power’ is also offered, though it doesn't result in big economy improvements to justify the extra cost.

There have been no major recurring issues reported with the latest Qashqai since going on sale in 2021. Nissan as a brand has a decent reliability record, too.

The 140hp petrol engine can hit up to an official figure of 44.7mpg, the 158hp engine manages 44.9mpg (with the CVT gearbox and two-wheel drive) and the e-Power gets up to 53.3mpg.

The Nissan Qashqai is 4,425mm long, 2,084mm wide (including door mirrors) and 1,625mm high.

Visia and Acenta Premium models have the biggest boots at 504 litres, dropping to 479 in the N-Connecta, 475 for the Tekna and 436 in the Tekna+. In e-Power models, the Tekna trim has a 479-litre boot and Tekna+ versions have 455 litres. The difference in size is because of luggage boards that offer different configurations to hold items more securely.

There are five seats in the Nissan Qashqai.

The Nissan Qashqai is available with the option of four-wheel drive on the 158hp petrol engine.

The first Nissan Qashqai went on sale in 2006. The second generation was introduced in 2013, and the third-generation in 2021.
