This is the new Volkswagen ID7, and it’s the brand’s first electric saloon car to provide an alternative to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2. It gets a new, more powerful motor than other VW EVs as well.

The cabin also features plenty of recycled materials, and there’s an all-new infotainment system as well. You can order your ID7 now, with prices starting from £55,570

New Volkswagen ID7 price and specs

The new Volkswagen ID7 is available to order in the UK now, however first deliveries won’t be until the first half of 2024. There’s just one trim level on offer from launch, however more options will be made available at a later date.

The only version available to start with is the Pro Launch Edition, and it’ll set you back £55,570. Go for a Polestar 2 with a comparable motor and battery combo and you’ll save over £10,000, while rear-wheel-drive versions of the recently-revised Tesla Model 3 are more than £15,000 cheaper.

So what are you getting for your extra cash? Well the ID7 is slightly larger than both the Model 3 and Polestar 2, so it should offer more interior space. Size wise, you can think of it as more of a middle ground between the Model 3 and Model S luxury saloon, or the BMW i4 and i7.

Standard equipment includes a whopping 15.0-inch infotainment screen, heated front seats and steering wheel, three-zone climate control, 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof and adaptive cruise control. Spec a Polestar 2 up to a similar level and the price gap closes to around £5,000, which is slightly easier to swallow for a larger car.

Volkswagen ID7 design

The new Volkswagen ID7 is a svelte-looking saloon with a sporty sloping roofline, and it’s sporting plenty of design features from other VW models.

That pointy nose has some sleek-looking LED headlights, connected by a full-width light bar across the bonnet. There are no fake grilles here, just some slim air intakes to cool the battery. Take note Audi e-tron GT.

Down the side is where this new car separates itself from other electric cars from VW. It’s not a boxy SUV like the ID4, it’s a sleek-looking saloon with a sloping roofline. You also get some gloss black side skirts, as well as the same flush-fitting door handles as the Volkswagen ID5.

At the back Volkswagen seems to have kept things simple. There’s a chunky light bar across the tailgate with a neat-looking LED light signature, and there are some subtle vents in the lower bumper.

New Volkswagen ID7 Shooting Brake spotted testing

As well as the ID7 saloon, there will also be a new estate version called the Shooting Brake. This name was first seen from VW on the Arteon, and it essentially means the car will have a more coupe-esque shape than your traditional boxy estate car. The front end looks pretty much the same as the saloon, however it’s the rear where you’ll see the big change.

That saloon boot has been replaced with a practical hatchback tailgate, although it looks more athletic than other estate cars like the Volvo V60. There aren’t many alternatives on the market if you’re after an electric estate car right new, with the MG 5 and the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo being the only real contenders until the new BMW i5 Touring comes along. Peugeot and Vauxhall are also soon to enter this market with the 308 and Astra electric estates.

Volkswagen ID7 interior

Volkswagen seems to have taken a leaf out of Tesla’s book with the massive 15.0-inch screen dominating the dashboard in the new ID7.

Just like in the Tesla Model 3, you control all the major functions, such as the climate control through this screen. There are some touch sensitive sliders underneath to adjust the temperature and stereo volume, and VW have listened to its customers and backlit these controls so you can see them at night.

Volkswagen has also confirmed that the ID7’s interior will be made using a few recycled materials, just like in the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. This includes fabrics made out of ocean plastics and recycled bottles, as well as recycled plastics in the insulation.

The seats are also 14-way adjustable, as well as being heated and cooled. There are even heat and moisture sensors in the seats which can turn on the heating or cooling as you need it. Another nice touch here is the optional panoramic roof. It’s made using clever glass which can turn opaque at the touch of a button, much like you have in the Porsche Taycan, meaning there’s no need for a bulky sun blind. It can even be operated using voice commands.

Volkswagen ID7 range and performance

The new Volkswagen ID7 uses a new electric motor on the rear wheels. It produces 286hp, however there’s no official performance stats just yet. An all-wheel-drive GTX model will also come along in September, and that car could have up to 340hp.

What has been confirmed though is battery sizes. From launch, the ID7 will be offered with a 77kWh in the Pro version. This offers up to 382 miles of range. Later on there will be a Pro S version with a larger 86kWh battery, offering up to 435 miles on a charge.

That’s a fair bit more than you get from the Tesla Model 3 Long Range; that car will do 374 miles of a charge. This is thanks in part to some clever aerodynamic touches, including a completely flat floor and spoilers in front of the front wheels to help the ID7 slip through the air more cleanly.
