Find out more about the BMW X2

Is the BMW X2 a good car?

This is the new BMW X2, and it’s rather like the humble tomato. As every good cook knows, while a tomato may be used like a vegetable, it’s really a fruit. In much the same way the X2 looks like an SUV, but BMW calls it an ‘SAC’ – that’s a Sports Activity Coupe in BMW-speak, or an SUV with a swoopy, coupe-like roof to you and I.

The headline change with this new model is the arrival of an all-electric version, the iX2, but in this review we’re going to concentrate on the petrol-powered models.

And yes, that’s just petrol – there’s no diesel in the new range, which may frustrate some high-mileage drivers. On the other hand, the new X2 is reasonably frugal, so long as you stick with the entry-level car.

The X2 sDrive20i has 170hp and while it may look like a 4x4, the sDrive part of the name tells you this model is two-wheel drive. That reduces weight and improves efficiency, as does the car’s mild-hybrid system, with the result that the sDrive 20i returns up to 47.1mpg in official tests.

There’s a big jump in performance if you opt for the M35i xDrive instead. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine has 300hp, with four-wheel drive to help put all that punch to the road. There’s a penalty at the pumps, though – the M35i returns up to 36.7mpg.

The BMW X2 M35i looks great and has exciting performance, but you'll spend more time at the petrol pump

The new X2 is bigger than the first model, and not just by a few millimetres here and there. It’s almost 20cm longer, which puts more daylight between the X2 and the smaller X1. The X2 is also wider and taller than its predecessor.

That’s good news for families, or anyone who found the original X2 a bit cramped. The back of the old car in particular was rather small compared with alternatives.

There’s more room for luggage as well as people. The mild-hybrid model has a 515-litre capacity, while the M35i has 560 litres for bags. The latter figure is a 90-litre improvement over the old car’s boot size.

BMW has updated the in-car tech as well as improving the X2’s practicality. You get the latest BMW infotainment system as standard, with twin displays that look like one huge, curved screen.

If you like the sound of more space, improved infotainment, and extra tech, you don’t have too long to wait. Order books for the new X2 are open now, with first deliveries expected in March 2024.

We’ll update you with a full review as soon as we’ve been able to give the car a thorough test.
